23rd Extravaganza

23rd Extravaganza

Hope you didn't miss the Turning POINT 23rd Annual Extravaganza on June 1. We awakened to  overcast skies with a chance of rain, but that did not dampen the enthusiasm of our participants. Many stated that they traveled through rain getting to Bachman Recreation Center, but mother nature was on our side - no rain! This year 25% of our participants were new to Turning POINT and more young kids. This is great news because it means that more people are now exposed to the vast outdoor activities that are available for people with physical disabilities.

There where 25 different activities to try (sailing could not sail due to weather). This year, the most popular activities were the zip line, pontoon boat ride, hand cycling, archery, adapted golf carts and water skiing (as always). David Gaston, Director of Gulf Coast chapter, introduced a motorized hand cycle he is developing.  You can still get exercise from this cycle by hand cycling and turning on the motor when a hill is too steep, etc.

Everyone took a break from the action to enjoy a hotdog and hamburger lunch grilled by Dylan Powers and members of VFW Post 5076. Dessert was homemade cookies by Celebration Restaurant and snow cones prepared by Boy Scout Troop 390. At 1:00, everyone went right back to the activities until 3pm. That is when everyone piles into the gym for the finale. We watched an exciting juniors 3 on 3 basketball final. The SmartDrive was demonstrated by Mobility Medical (see article below) which stirred a lot of interest.

Colours Wheelchairs, the Randy Snow Push Foundation and Turning POINT presented junior Crysta Evans with a tennis wheelchair. She attended the 1st RSPF tennis clinic and feel in love with the sport. Hope she hits many a yellow balls in that chair. This was followed by the drawing of many prizes. For each activity tried, the participant received a raffle ticket. The final drawing was for the grand prize, a BMS Power Cart, adapted with hand controls by United Access. The lucky winner was Jordan Lee.
