Deer Hunt in NC

Deer Hunt in NC

November 29th in Surry County, NC, Turning POINT Carolina (TPC) partnered with Wheelin Sportsman of the National Wild Turkey Federation (NWTF) for a deer hunt.

Surry County has been the site for so many great hunts over the past 8 years. Deer, turkey and dove hunts that defy description. TPC has long benefited from the generous hearts of the hunters and land owners from that area and affiliated with the NWTF.

The hunt began with an over night stay in Dobson, NC at the local Hampton Inn with a Saturday morning rendezvous at 4 30am (ouch!). The event had TPC hunters meet with local land owners and hunters and then were placed all over the county in prime locations and blinds.

I, (DK) had the privilege to be teamed up with Scott McNeely a local pest control business owner and hunter on a picturesque spot on a 600 acre piece of land. After a portable blind assembly we settled in to the morning hunt. As soon as I put my binoculars to my eyes I spotted a buck looking up the hill at us. Safe light was questionable and in a second the deer moved along a crreek and out of site. Little did I know I would not see anything for the next 4 hours. At 9:45am, as Scott and I talked in whisper, I see a doe pop out of the woods to our left and then 3 more. My freezer being empty of all venison, I took a shot at the what I thought was the biggest doe of the bunch. I missed ? this being my first hunt of the season (excuse lol) all the deer scattered from my 7mm explosion...except for one who stood still a second too long. Dropped it ! When we got to it, after a 30 minute wait, it was much larger than we thought, 130lbs was the guess. We had to field dress it in order to get it into the pick up. Well, that would prove costly in the big doe and buck contest. My deer was the only one taken that morning.

After a great lunch, Jeff Dills one of the TPC hunters, hunting near me in the afternoon, shot a doe and it weighed in at 119 lbs. Jeff received the big doe award.  5 deer were harvested by our group that afternoon and 6 overall. Our hosts cleaned and quartered our deer and off to the processor the next day. Freezer full of venison and memories of a great hunt still fresh, we are planing our next hunt before the end of season.
